THE DOOR WHORE:

CONFESSIONS OF A RESTAURANT DIVA

BY FERN ESPOSITO

A HILARIOUS TALE OF LIFE IN THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS,
FROM A WOMAN’S PERSPECTIVE

"…a most enjoyable read and accurate glimpse of the behind the scenes at a successful restaurant with the added bonus of being told from a woman’s perspective” --Julian Romano, Julian’s restaurant, NYC

“Witty, sincere and tons of fun, The Door Whore is fiction at it’s best. This is a must read for foodies and wannabe restaurant owners!”—Stefanie Shaffer, author Heroes Don’t Always Wear Capes
“This is an incredibly funny book. I will never eat out again without thinking of what drama is going on in the kitchen. Thank you for a good laugh and a behind-the-scenes look at the restaurant business.” —Debra Gaynor, reviewyourbook.com

Let’s face it, at some point, we’ve all dreamed of beating the odds and opening a wildly successful restaurant that wins over finicky food critics and diners alike. And in the male-dominated restaurant business, what woman hasn’t dreamed that she can do it better? Enter author Fern Esposito, a New Jersey-based entrepreneur who realized that ambition with her own upscale restaurant. Esposito’s new novel, The Door Whore: Confessions of a Restaurant Diva creates a fictional restaurant and demonstrates what it really takes, from soup to nuts, for a female business owner to live out her dream.

The main character, Ivy Zingara, is the quintessential suburban wife, mother and foodie who finds her life turned upside down when she becomes the “door whore” of the hot new restaurant Sentimento. A Door Whore is a derogatory term in restaurant lingo describing the woman who greets you upon entering a dining establishment. Despite her title, Ivy Zingara isn’t just any pretty face behind the podium, she is the brains, passion and the heart and soul of Sentimento, a four star restaurant in the affluent suburbs of NJ. Throughout the novel, Ivy’s naiveté to the business exudes and The Door Whore presents an unsanitized version of the restaurant world and a glimpse of the chaos and how it plays out in her own life and that of her family and close friends.

Ivy’s tale highlights the drama and mayhem that comes along with owning a restaurant as well as the outrageous cast of characters involved in the business. As the novel unfolds, Esposito also weaves into the story insightful and humorous anecdotes of the industry, including a glossary of must-know restaurant terms (The Sentimento Guide to Restaurant Slang) such as:

86: To run out of an item
Pittsburgh: Meat cooked extremely rare on the inside yet appearing dark and grilled on the outside
Auction off Food: When the food runner doesn’t know the position numbers and says something like this, “Who gets the Bolognese?” Totally unacceptable.
Line: Where the food is prepared in the kitchen.

“Anyone who ever dreamed of opening a restaurant can’t possibly imagine the highs – and the lows – that come with the experience,” says Esposito. “The Door Whore transports readers to the Sentimento Ristorante in all of its outrageousness—and I am confident they will love every minute of it!”
